If you have only seen Datça in August, winter is somewhere else entirely. The walking routes open up, the coves empty out and the town returns to its own pace — but whether the place you are heading to is open becomes a real question. What to do in winter, what stays open, and what to confirm before you set off.
In winter most of the peninsula is left to itself. Some seafront businesses close, but the centre, Eski Datça and the villages carry on all year. The weather is ideal for walking and accommodation is at its cheapest.
The Karia Way is a waymarked long-distance trail along the Muğla coast. Eight of its stages cross the peninsula: from Eski Datça down to Domuzçukuru, on to Palamutbükü and Knidos, then back to town via Mersincik and Karaköy. In summer the real problems on these routes are midday heat and lack of water — in winter neither applies. Hard, shadeless stages like #11 and #12, avoided in summer, are at their best in the cold months.

Open the Karia Way stages ›Heat is not the problem in winter, but daylight is short. On the hard stages you need an early start to finish before dark. The summer advice is reversed: you carry less water, and daylight becomes the constraint.
An open-water race held every January at Taşlık Beach, with 1,500 m and 5,000 m courses; the longer one is open to swimmers 18 and over. The twentieth edition took place in 2026. It draws swimmers from abroad who want to get into the Datça sea in midwinter, and entries close weeks in advance.
When the almond trees come into flower, usually in mid-February, Datça Municipality holds this festival. There are walks through blossoming orchards, craft workshops, street music and stalls of local produce. It feels less like a crowd event and more like a weekend at the town's own pace. Exact dates are announced by the municipality each year.
The businesses page works out whether each place is open right now from its opening hours, and marks the closed ones with a red 'Closed' badge. Checking there before you set off beats arriving at a locked door. For places that shut for the whole season, though, a phone call is still the safest bet.
What closes in winter is mainly the seasonal businesses along the shore. The centre, Eski Datça and the villages carry on all year — shops, bakeries, tradespeople and daily life stay put.

Open useful numbers ›The car ferry from Körmen (Karaköy) harbour runs in the summer season; in winter you reach Datça by road. The village buses are run by MUTTAŞ and their times differ between summer and winter — if you are heading to Palamutbükü, Mesudiye or Knidos, treat the return time as seriously as the outbound one, because the last service leaves early in the evening.

From the end of April, boat tours, guesthouses and seafront businesses open one by one. May is the easiest month for anyone who wants to see Datça before the crowds: the sea is still cool but the bays are empty and nothing needs booking.
